Helpful Tips For Training Your Cat

It's time to train our feline friends! Cats can be taught just like dogs: the trick is in the treats. Cats are very food-driven so as long as you have the purr-fect snack, they will be more than happy to learn the commands below!

TRAIN YOUR CAT TO SIT

Like dogs, cats can be trained to sit also! It is easiest to get them to sit in preparation for meals and treats. Take the food and when they sit down to look at you, say "sit" and reward them.

TO COME WHEN CALLED

Not so much a trick, but rather a helpful tactic for getting your cat's attention when you need it. Teaching your cat to respond to its name is much the same as any other trick or behavioral training tactic. Treats or clickers both work for reinforcement.

TO SHAKE HANDS

This trick is good to use after your cat has mastered "sit" and "come." When they are sitting, just raise their hand, say "shake" and give them a treat.

TO FETCH

Use a toy they like! For example, anything infused with cat nip usually does the trick. Throw the toy and when they have it, call them back. Give them a treat and throw again. They will pick up the game in no time!

TO WALK ON A LEASH

The best way to get started is to first familiarize your cat with the leash or harness itself. Perhaps ‘play’ with it a little, while your cat is around, or leave it in some of his or her favorite spots around the house. Establish it as safe and inviting. Then, try the harness or collar by itself to let your cat get comfortable with the fit and feel of it. After that has become second nature, you can attach the leash and begin going for small walks together!
