The Importance of Nail Health in Pets

October 10, 2024 Rebekah Sparks, NCG
Pet Paradise Nail Trims

Just like with their human friends, pets’ nails can become troublesome if not kept in good condition and maintained regularly. However, not all nails need the same treatment and can vary in growth times. At Pet Paradise, we strive to help keep your pet current in all things healthy — from vaccines, training, and grooming, we can handle your most of your pets’ needs.

What Do Well-Groomed Dog Nails Look Like?

Healthy nails should not contact the floor while the foot is flat on the surface they are standing on. If the nails are overly long, they put unnatural pressure on the dog’s tarsal bones. This can lead to pain while walking and can create long term damage to the tarsal bones and joints. If ignored for long periods of time, the bones can become permanently deformed, or cause arthritis, lameness, and impede mobility, leading to behavior issues with your pet because of the discomfort they experience while moving.

Difference in Nails

Sometimes, if we wait too long between nail trims, the pet’s quick can elongate far enough that a vet may need to clip and cauterize the vein to prevent excessive bleeding. In some cases, a vet may even need sedatives to help keep your pet calm and comfortable to prevent a bad experience for your pet.

To prevent this experience, we advocate that pets’ nails be maintained no less than 5-8 weeks, and some pets will need trims even more often! Do not fret though if you’re behind on your pet manicures! If we catch this early enough and start a routine now, you can sometimes achieve the desired recession of the quick by regular biweekly appointments.

Help our mission to keep your pets healthy and ask about pre-booking grooming services so you never miss an appointment!
